How often should my chimney be cleaned?
The National Fire Code of Canada states: "Every Chimney, flue, and flue pipe shall be inspected to identify any dangerous condition annually, at the time of addition of any appliance, and after any chimney fire." This is to ensure that the flue pipe is free from creosote build-up and also to allow the WETT certified sweep to make sure there has been no harmful deterioration of the structure of the flue itself. Some chimneys need more frequent cleaning due to high rates of usage. As a rule of thumb, any build-up of creosote over 1/8 on an inch should be removed.

Can I clean my own chimney?
The physical act of cleaning is possible for most people. However, as professional sweeps, we have specialized equipment to better clean and service your chimney. We are also experienced in recognizing potential problems and system deterioration that you may miss. Therefore it is not in your best interest to clean your own chimney.

I have clay flue tiles. Do I need a stainless steel liner?
If your clay flue liner is properly installed and is in good condition (not cracked or spalling) then you do not need a stainless liner.

I never burn; do I need my chimney swept?
I would recommend cleaning the chimney and then installing a screened rain cap to keep animals and birds out of the flue. Periodically note the condition of the chimney and if it shows signs of deterioration, have us look at it.

What does WETT stand for?
WETT stands for "Wood Energy Technical Training". This is a multiple course training program that is recognized by the insurance industry, fire department, and building officials. It is the only assurance that the person performing the work is qualified and has formal training to support this.

Are chimney cleaning logs any good?
The cleaning logs do contain chemicals that are intended to dry out the creosote and allow it to possibly fall off easier when brushed. They are, however, no substitute for a qualified and trained individual mechanically cleaning and "removing" creosote deposits. If the cleaning logs do allow the creosote to fall off, then the flakes of combustible creosote will build up in the base of the pipe or behind the fireplace damper and still be a fire hazard. Relying on the use of chemical logs, you also lose the benefit of having a trained professional visually inspect your wood burning system for faults and deterioration.

When is the best time to clean my chimney?
Spring is the best time to clean. This way, the system is cleaned and ready for use in the fall. This also allows time to schedule any repairs that are needed before fall.

What should I look for in a chimney service company?
Look for a company that is WETT certified and also a member of the Chimney Sweep Association of Canada (CSAC). Look for an established company that carries liability insurance as well as Workplace Safety & Insurance Board coverage.
